John Moore is a special correspondent for Getty Images and is one of the most recognized photojournalists working today. He has worked in 70 countries on six continents and was posted internationally for most of his career, first to Nicaragua, then India, South Africa, Mexico, Egypt, and Pakistan.

2020 finds John in a hazmat suit, riding along with first responders, his lens trained on the COVID-19 pandemic, an enemy that respects no borders, arrives unannounced and behaves differently in each host, making it the most mysterious and deadly enemy we have faced yet.  Moore flew to Washington state in February to give us our first look at the virus on U.S. soil. Most recently, he is documenting its ravages in and around the second epicenter, New York City, especially as the virus impacts its most vulnerable residents.

Just before the pandemic became visible on U.S. soil, Moore flew to Australia to cover the bushfires and to document the work being done by organizations and volunteers to rescue and rehabilitate Australia’s endemic wildlife. For more than a decade—and long before it became a political football—Moore has documented immigration at the U.S./Mexico border, providing the world with a balanced perspective to help understand the complex issue from each viewpoint: the officers and agents patrolling the border, the families desperate for a better life, and the U.S. citizens whose systems are both benefitted and strained by the arrival of immigrants.

Moore has won the profession’s top honors, including the 2019 World Press Photo of the Year award for the image, known as “Crying Girl on the Border,” that demanded a nation’s attention and helped stop the practice of separating families at the border. He has also won the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for his comprehensive immigration coverage and the Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography for his photos of the war in Iraq.

A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Moore lives with his family in Stamford, Connecticut.
